Invest. Analyze. Connect.
Invest
Beyond long-only investing.
Long/short framing, position sizing, risk, and simulated portfolio construction — the mechanics of how capital is actually allocated and defended.
- —Long/short idea generation
- —Simulated portfolio management
- —Risk and position sizing
Analyze
From idea to investment decision.
Company and industry analysis, valuation, and thesis development done with primary sources and explicit assumptions.
- —Company & industry analysis
- —Valuation and modeling
- —Thesis development and pitches
Connect
Proximity is an advantage.
Fairfield's alumni network and Northeast location place students near hedge funds, asset managers, and allocators across the industry.
- —Alumni and professional outreach
- —Speakers and mentorship
- —Industry exposure
From idea to investment decision.
Eight steps. Every idea travels the same path, and every step can be challenged.
Discover
Where ideas come from.
Screens, industry reading, filings, spin-offs, and everyday observation. Members learn to source ideas deliberately rather than react to headlines.
Research
Understand the business first.
Unit economics, competitive position, customers, incentives, and disclosure. Primary documents before opinions.
Value
Price is not value.
Comparable analysis, DCF, sum-of-the-parts, and scenario work — with explicit assumptions that can be challenged line by line.
Build the Thesis
State what you believe and why.
A variant view, the catalysts, what the market is missing, the risks, and the specific evidence that would prove the thesis wrong.
Pitch
Research only matters if it can withstand scrutiny.
A structured pitch to the group: thesis, valuation, risk, sizing, and the counterargument stated honestly.
Investment Committee
Research. Defend. Decide.
The committee interrogates the work, debates the variant view, and reaches a decision on the simulated portfolio.
Monitor
The work continues after the decision.
Tracking earnings, catalysts, and thesis drift. Positions are revisited on evidence, not on price movement alone.
Review
Judge the process, not just the outcome.
Post-mortems on closed positions: what was right, what was luck, and what should change in how we work.
Research. Defend. Decide.
Students who want deeper involvement can take on committed Analyst and Investment Committee roles as the organization builds out.
Analyst
Own the work.
- —Maintain coverage of an assigned sector or theme
- —Build and defend valuation work
- —Author written theses and pitch memos
- —Present formally to the investment committee
Investment Committee
Make the call.
- —Interrogate assumptions and stress-test theses
- —Approve, size, or reject ideas in the simulated portfolio
- —Set risk parameters and review exposures
- —Run post-mortems on closed positions
FHFG's portfolio is simulated and educational. The organization does not manage university or outside capital.
